EU’s accession to the European Convention on Human Rights

The EU and the ECHR: New Statewatch pamphlet

in:
A new publication from Statewatch, The EU’s accession to the European Convention on Human Rights: a cause for celebration or concern? by Chris Jones is now available

According to Jones, “internal negotiations over whether to accede to the ECHR have been mired by problems and highlight fundamental shortcomings with the EU's decision making process. An insistence on secrecy and an emphasis on "strategic priorities" have come to take precedence over individual rights."

All 27 EU member states are signatories to the ECHR, but the EU itself has only had ‘legal personality’ since the Lisbon Treaty, which also commits it to signing up. To find out what’s holding them up, download this free pamphlet.
