Your Vote Against Predatory Capitalism

Your Vote Against Predatory Capitalism Matters

By John Perkins

While the media has its finely tuned witty repartee in full motion during the Republican run-off races, don’t let that repartee fool you into thinking this election or any other will usher in a new paradigm. Only you can do that. Us. We the People taking action.

Elections do matter --  as a way for us to select progressive politicians who want to serve the mission of sustainability, peace and true prosperity for all. But, we must not be lulled into believing that they will do that without our constant vigil and daily actions.

We can only vote once during elections – every two or four years. However, we vote every day in the marketplace by choosing to support corporations that are dedicated to being environmentally and socially responsible.

Our votes count when we vote to end this era of predatory capitalism that began in the 1970s. Today people around the world are waking up and speaking out. The lessons of Latin America, the Middle East, and the Occupy movements inspire us to choose to occupy peace, sustainability, and human rights.

The time has arrived for all of us to defeat politicians who want to restrict our rights to assemble and speak from our hearts, to diminish the power of those in the banking systems and on Wall Street who undermine the values that established the very foundations of this great nation, to end the militarized economy, and to usher in an era that will be characterized by cooperation and compassion.

We need organizations that will promote sustainable energy, and help starving people feed themselves, that will create a world where no one is denied medical care and the right to live out his or her last days in dignity, and where there is no more need for an arms race because we stand united in building a sustainable and thriving future for all our grandchildren – whether they are born in Afghanistan, Somalia, Venezuela, or the ghettoes of New York City.

So as you go to the voting booths during this election year and as you walk the aisles of the places where you shop, feel your power. Vote wisely in all these places. And also take daily action. There are so many opportunities! Here are just a few ideas:

Volunteer at or donate money to non-profits that represent your values. We need organizations that will make a better world.

One thing you could do TODAY is to support those who are working to ensure the Internet is not going to be censored via SOPA- http://americancensorship.org/ . Today http://sopastrike.com/ thousands of sites – http://www.sopastrike.com , will go dark to protest  http://fightforthefuture.org/pipa SOPA & PIPA, two US bills http://sopacountdown.com/ racing through Congress that threaten http://iworkfortheinternet.org/ prosperity, http://trustnerds.org/ online security, and http://fightforthefuture.org/pipa/ freedom of expression

Or choose to volunteer at non-profits that are focused on sustainability. Donate to Pachamama –  http://www.pachamama.org and DreamChange –  http://www.dreamchange.org which I support fully.

Or join the Moms Clean Air Task force - http://www.momscleanairforce.org/ and support the Care2 Petition – http://www.care2.com actions as well.

Each of you has a real vote in this world and the way you can exercise it is to take steps away from the pollsters and politician hype-fests and choose to create a better world for all of us – every sentient being on this planet.

There is no alternative vision that any politician can offer us unless it includes a vision of peace, prosperity, and liberty for all.
